The Ecotone Center engages a few different land sites- tending soil, plants, water and people from a holistic, agroecology approach grounded in BIPOC ecological knowledges, ancestral wisdom and deep listening.

The Healing Justice Garden

We are tending a 1/4 acre area in Arcata, CA collaboratively designed with formerly incarcerated people as a space for healing around interpersonal and state violence. We focused initially on remediating soil compaction issues from decades of cattle grazing on the land, and adding compost to activiate the microbial life in the soil. Now daffodils are starting to emerge and more flowers and medicinal plants are being installed through Spring 2026.

Redwood Creek Watershed Forest

We engage a 40 acre forest and creek along Hwy 299,  a California scenic bylaw about 25 minutes east of Arcata, CA. A creek runs through the property with a spiritually powerful waterfall for meditation and healing. This creek was once called 'negro joe creek' in a derogatory reference to the first documented Black person in Humboldt County- Leroy Watkins. This site surfaces questions about how we practice Black + Indigenous solidarities, how we heal from racial and colonial injustice, and what it means to reckon with the past.

Community Land Trust

We are actively seeking a permanent site for our land-based healing work and are developing partnerships with aligned movement groups for a community land trust of 6-10 organizations. Ideally, the site would have open areas, as well as forest. The land would be held in common challenging dominant notions of private property. Organizations can build autonomous structures and we can invest in collective infrastructure as well. This will be a space for retreats/immersions, regenerative farming, and practicing new ways of being in community.
